De Miami a Barcelona
Vaig néixer a Miami, Florida... per tant, estic molt acostumada a la
calor i a estar prop de la platja. Com que els meus pares es van divorciar quan
jo era molt petita, és com si hagués tingut dues famílies. La meva mare es va
casar i és professora de teatre, assessora acadèmica, músic i ballarina. El meu
pare també es va tornar a casar i té tres fills adorables! Tinc molts amics on
visc, però com que tots ens hem graduat a l’escola d’art, tothom ha hagut de
marxar a diferents estats per feina. Amb la qual cosa tinc molta sort, ja que
si mai decideixo fer un viatge llarg pel país, puc quedar-me a casa seva. Sóc dels
Estats Units, però encara no n’he vist ni la meitat.
Vaig triar la carrera d’Història de l’art, desenvolupament artístic i estudis
museístics a la universitat de Florida. Vaig rebre un munt de classes diferents:
des d’estudiar l’art asiàtic fins a com escriure amb codi a l’ordinador. Part
dels meus estudis requerien treballar en un museu, per això vaig haver de fer
moltes pràctiques durant la carrera. He treballat com a dissenyadora de llums i
també al departament d’educació.
Quan el moment de la graduació s’anava acostant, no tenia ni idea a què
volia dedicar-me o si volia seguir formant-me, i uns quants dels meus amics
havien començat treballant a diferents països, com Corea o Tailàndia. Jo tenia
nocions d’espanyol, però volia tenir-ne més fluïdesa i també poder estar a prop
dels museus europeus. L’ensenyament em cridava l’atenció perquè realment
m’agrada treballar amb nens. CAPS és el programa que vaig sol·licitar i, encara
que no paguen gaire, m’agradava la idea de conviure amb una família catalana.
No sabia res de la cultura, el menjar o de la llengua abans de venir cap aquí.
Durant el meu primer mes a Sant Vicenç, la meva família d’acollida va
assegurar-se que jo estigués còmoda amb la nova situació. M’ho van ensenyar tot,
sobre com s’hi vivia: on compraven el pa, on feien el cafè i, fins i tot, vaig
assistir a una de les classes de gralla de l’Arnau. Pel que fa a l’escola, les
mestres d’anglès m’han ajudat i explicat com funciona l’escola. Amb la resta de
mestres acostumo a tenir converses curtes i amistoses, però l’obstacle de la
llengua fa difícil que ens puguem conèixer més a fons.
He viscut amb la família Agüero des de l’inici de curs. Per això, hem
anat forjant una relació molt propera i
estic molt agraïda de tot el que han fet per mi. Han fet la meva adaptació
a Espanya fàcil i s’han convertit com en una família. Vaig passar les vacances
de Nadal amb ells i tots els parents i són molt divertits. A l’hora de sopar,
les converses sempre són moments d’aprendre coses noves. Acostumem a parlar
anglès o espanyol, ja que no entenc el català. Tenim una pissarra prop de la
taula on escrivim les paraules que ens són difícils de recordar o que són
vocabulari útil i interessant. L’Arnau sempre ens diverteix a l’hora de sopar,
és un nen molt comediant i intel·ligent. L’Enric és el que més domina l’anglès.
És un bromista i a més sempre té una opinió sobre qualsevol tema. Mari Cruz és
una de les persones més dolces i úniques que he conegut. Sempre hi és quan la
necessito i, encara que no sempre ens entenguem quan parlem, hem connectat molt.
A l’escola treballo amb tots els alumnes des de P3 fins a 6è. Pels
alumnes d’infantil, canto cançons i llegeixo contes, treballem en la
pronunciació del vocabulari. Des de primer fins a tercer, ajudo quan estan fent
exercicis amb el quadern i els passo exàmens orals a final del trimestre. Des
de 4t fins a 6è fem grups de conversa de 5 alumnes, planifico les sessions cada
setmana per cada curs en referència al que estan treballant a classe. De cada
grup, m’agraden coses diferents, perquè d’any en any canvien substancialment.
Estar amb els alumnes és el que més gaudeixo. M’alegren el dia.
Cada cap de setmana vaig a Barcelona a explorar la ciutat amb amics.
M’encanta el menjar, el cafè, la música, els mercats! N’estic enamorada. És un
lloc preciós i la meva intenció és viure-hi l’any que ve. També he tingut
l’oportunitat de viatjar a València, Sitges i Madrid.
Aquest estiu vull viatjar per Europa. M’agradaria visitar Suècia, Itàlia, Portugal, Hongria i Anglaterra. També intentaré treure’m el certificat del TELF per poder ensenyar professionalment el proper curs a Barcelona. Després d’això, no n’estic segura. Estic pensant de dedicar-me al disseny d’interiors, però em caldrà seguir estudiant. De moment, però, el meu objectiu és veure món.

From Miami to
Barcelona
I was born and
raised in Miami, Florida- so I am very used to the heat and being near the
beach. My parents divorced when I was very young, so it’s like I have two
separate families. My mom has remarried and is a theater teacher, school
counselor, musician, and dancer. My Dad remarried and has had three boys, and
they are adorable! I have lots of friends back home, but since we have all
graduated from art school, they have moved to many different states for job
opportunities. Which is lucky for me, whenever I decide road trip across the
country, I can stay with them. I am from America but still haven’t seen most of
it.
I majored in Art
History, Studio Art, and Museum Studies at Florida State University. I took
lots of different classes, from studying Asian Art to learning how to write
code on the computer. Part of my studies required working in a museum, so I had
a few internships during school. I worked as a lighting designer and also in
the education department.
As graduation was
approaching, I had no idea what I wanted to do for a career or additional
schooling, and a few of my friends had started teaching in different countries,
like South Korea and Thailand. I had a foundation in Spanish, wanted to become
fluent, and also be near Museums in Europe. Teaching was appealing to me
because I really love working with kids. CAPS is the program I applied to and
although it doesn’t pay much, I liked that I would be living with a Catalonian
family. I knew nothing about the culture, the food, or the language before
coming here.
During my first
month in Sant Vicenç, my host family made sure I was comfortable with the new
living situation. They showed me everything about their life- where they bought
bread, where they take their coffee; I even sat in on one of Arnau’s gralla
lessons! As for the school, the English teachers really helped me get
accustomed to how everything worked. I have small and very friendly
conversations with the rest of the staff, but the language barrier does make it
difficult to get to know them.
I have lived with
the Agüero family since the beginning of the school year. So, we have become
very close and I am very grateful for everything they have done for me. They
made my transition into Spain very easy and have truly become like family. I
spent the Christmas holidays with them and the entire family, and they are a
lot of fun. During dinner, our conversations are always learning experiences.
It’s better for us to speak in either English or Spanish, because I don’t
understand any Catalan. We have a dry erase board next to the table, where we
write the words that are difficult to remember or are interesting vocabulary.
Arnau is always very entertaining at the dinner table; he is a silly and very
smart kid. Enric speaks the most English. He is a joker, and has a lot to say
about any subject. Mari Cruz is one of the sweetest and unique people I’ve ever
met. She is always there for me and even though we don’t understand each other
all the time, we are very close.
In the school I see
every single student from p3 to 6è. For the younger students, I will sing songs
and read stories, work on pronunciation of vocabulary. Between grades 1 and 3,
I help with workbook exercises and also do oral exams at the end of the
semester. From grades 4 and up I take out groups of 5 for conversation
practice. I plan a lesson for each grade every week that correlates to what
they’re learning in class. I enjoy different things about working with each age
group, because developmentally they change so much each year. The students are
my favourite part! They make my day.
Every weekend I am
in Barcelona, exploring the city with friends. I love the food. The coffee. The
music. The markets! I am in love with it! It is a beautiful place and I am going
to live there next year. I have also gotten to travel to Valencia, Sitges, and
Madrid.
This summer I am taking a road trip around Europe- I
plan on visiting Sweden, Italy, Portugal, Hungary and England. After I plan on
getting my TEFL certificate so I can teach professionally next year, while I
live in Barcelona. And after that, I’m not sure. I’m thinking about pursuing a
career in interior design, which would require more school. For the time being,
my plan is to see as much of the world as I can.
